What Causes Heartburn GERD in Women?

heartburn gerdHeartburn starts as a feeling of heat or warmth, a burning sensation that is often accompanied by pain. It starts in the upper abdomen, just beneath the breastbone or sternum and can oftentimes be felt all the way through to your backbone because of what is called “referred pain.”

This uncomfortable feeling may give you a sour taste in your mouth, your belly may gurgle, you may have an increase in flatulence and this feeling of burning and pain can bubble up into your throat.

GERD is the short name for the disease version of heartburn. If you are experiencing heartburn and acid reflux more than twice a week, you could be a candidate for a GERD diagnosis – which only a doctor can make.

Heartburn and GERD Statistics

Statistics from the Mayo Clinic:

–>Over 60 million Americans have heartburn at least once a month
–>15 million Americans experience heartburn daily.
–>This equates to just about 1 in 18 people have heartburn.
–>65% of people with heartburn may have symptoms day and night.
–>95 million Americans suffer from some type of digestive problem.
–>Over 10 million people are hospitalized every year, due to a gastrointestinal problem.
–>Digestive diseases are the cause of over 200,000 deaths every year.
–>Direct medical cause of digestive disease run upwards of $20 billion annually.

–>75% of people taking conventional treatments for digestive problems still have symptoms.

The Dope About Prescription Medicines, Antacids and Heartburn

Nexium and Prevacid are the number 3 and 4 top selling prescription drugs today–tens of billions of dollars are being made by making patients out of adults and wee little ones alike.

Totally unnecessary.

Even though they’re allegedly “approved” for small children, what most people don’t realize is that acid reducing drugs are NOT harmless and NOT safe.

In fact, they do far more harm than good.

Here’s why: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like Prevacid and Nexium are designed to reduce the amount of hydrochloric acid in your stomach.

But when you do this, you completely throw off the balance of bacteria in your intestinal tract and give harmful bacteria the upper hand.

So acid reducers are literally killers of probiotics (good bacteria) in your gut.

Antacids are made from Calcium Carbonate and while they claim it’s “good” for you, what they fail to tell you is that this is the cheapest and least-absorbable form of calcium available — it used in chalk and concrete and is better suited to your landscaping than your gut.

What Does GERD Have To Do With Heartburn?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a more serious form of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) or HEARTBURN, which is common. GER occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) opens spontaneously, for varying periods of time, or does not close properly and stomach contents rise up into the esophagus. GER is also called acid reflux or acid regurgitation, because digestive juices-called acids-rise up with the food.

The esophagus is the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. The LES is a ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that acts like a valve between the esophagus and stomach.

What Does Heartburn Have to Do With Agina?

Actually heartburn has nothing whatsoever to do with the “heart” or problems associated with the heart, though at times, the pain may feel exactly as if you are having or experiencing Agina. If you think you are experiencing Agina, don’t mess around with it, call your doctor immediately or go to the emergency room. If it’s heartburn, they will tell you. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Referred Pain Associated with Heartburn-GERD
Referred pain is also known as “reflective pain.” It’s a term that describes pain near or next to the area in which the pain is occurring, however, referred pain, by the information transfer along the nervous system, can be experienced at a distance from the area of the original “hurt,” thus giving the impression that the pain is separate from it. Think of it like a tangle in electrical wiring that’s sending out “shorts” to the entire system.

Heartburn-GERD Goes By Many Names

Heartburn goes by many names: indigestion, acid regurgitation, sour stomach, or pyrosis. It is not at all associated with problems in your heart, though it is called heartburn.

You may experience problems with bloating, burping, nausea, swallowing, problems with digestive tract elimination (constipation or diarrhea) and you may experience sleep problems, a chronic cough, asthma, choking episodes or wheezing. The symptoms from heartburn can last up to two hours or longer.

Get Immediate Relief From Heartburn-Gerd

Rather than reaching for the “antacid relief” for heartburn, try this centuries old recipe on a temporary basis:

Add 1/2 teaspoon to 1/2 glass (4 fl. oz.) of water every 2 hours, or as directed by physician. Dissolve completely in water. Accurately measure 1/2 teaspoon. Do not take more than the following amounts in 24 hours:

–Seven 1/2 teaspoons.
–Three 1/2 teaspoons if you are over 60 years.

Do not use the maximum dosage for more than 2 weeks.

Warnings (from Arm and Hammer Baking Soda):
–>Do not use if you are on a sodium restricted diet unless directed by a doctor.
–>Ask a doctor or a pharmacist before use if you are taking a prescription drug. Antacids may interact with certain prescription drugs.
–>Do not administer to children under age 5.
–>Consult a doctor if severe stomach pain occurs after taking this product.
–>Stop use and ask a doctor if symptoms last more than 2 weeks.
–>STOMACH WARNING: TO AVOID SERIOUS INJURY, DO NOT TAKE UNTIL POWDER IS COMPLETELY DISSOLVED. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT NOT TO TAKE THIS PRODUCT WHEN OVERLY FULL FROM FOOD OR DRINK.

Natural Remedies for Heartburn-GERD

If you are suffering from gas, bloating, constipation, or other digestive pain, there are several herbal and homeopathic remedies that can soothe your cranky gut and relieve your discomfort fast:

Betaine Hydrochloride:This beet-based source of hydrochloric acid increases stomach acid and is one of the most effective supplements for indigestion caused by hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid). Most common in those over the age of 50, low stomach acid causes poor nutrient digestion and absorption and leads to fatigue.

Carbo vegetabilis: this popular homeopathic remedy relieves bloating, flatulence and indigestion and helps soothe a cranky digestive system.

Chamomile: Used as a tea, chamomile is an excellent home remedy for heartburn, indigestion, colic, nausea and general stress. It also has mild relaxant and sedative properties.

Dandelion: The dried roots and fresh greens are both used traditionally as an overall digestive and liver tonic. This remedy works best in a simple tea.

Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL): This herbal extract soothes the digestive tract by increasing the mucosal lining. The best form to use is a chewable tablet that can provide quick relief.

Fennel: this culinary herb is also known as a carminative, which means it helps expel gas from the intestinal tract. It helps relieve abdominal cramps, gas, and bloating. Fennel seeds can be used in cooking or made into a tasty licorice tea.

Ginger: This wonderful digestive aid alleviates nausea, strengthens the lining of the upper gastrointestinal tract, and protects against ulcers and parasites. (buy the crystallized ginger in the natural foods section of your store)

Nux Vomica: This homeopathic remedy is often given to people who suffer stress-related digestive problems. It helps relieve indigestion, heartburn, abdominal cramps, nausea and diarrhea.

Peppermint (and spearmint): Like fennel, peppermint is also a carminative that helps ease gas, bloating , IBS and nausea according to some studies. It’s an overall digestive aid that’s soothing, refreshing, and quick acting. You can steep peppermint leaves for tea. Peppermint
oil is also available in capsule form.

Because our diets involve so much fried, fatty, and processed foods, more than 90 million Americans suffer from some kind of digestive pain. It starts with heartburn and GERD symptoms, but it doesn’t end there. Other complications like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Diverticulitis, Colitis, Painful Gas, Bloating, Diarrhea, Crohn’s Disease and a whole host of other complaints can result from having an over-production of acid in your system.

However, there is a solution, available right now in your kitchen, and it’s called Food Combining. You can reclaim your life from the chronic conditions that have filled your days with pain, discomfort, and constant frustration. Most people don’t understand that combining certain foods is deadly to your digestive tract. Instead of putting yourself through the misery of prescription medications and their side effects, you can easily change the way you eat, not necessarily the “what.”

…Even if you’ve been suffering for years or decades

…Even if you’ve tried every medical solution under the sun without relief

…Even if the misery has pushed you almost to the point of no return-as it has for so many people
